Cross stitching at sea!

Where do you do most of your stitching? If you’re anything like us, the answer to that would probably be “curled up on the sofa”! So, we were fascinated when The World of Cross Stitching fan Tim Hughes got in touch to tell us about his rather more unusual spot for catching up with his works-in-progress -- on board a ship!

A chief officer in the Merchant Navy, Tim spends a lot of time at sea. “It can sometimes get boring and lonely, especially when I’m off duty, but cross stitching takes my mind off being away from home. I find it so absorbing – hours can pass away in no time!” he reveals.

It was almost by accident that newbie-stitcher Tim discovered the joys of cross stitching. “About a year ago, my ship had docked in the Netherlands for a couple of weeks, so I ventured into town and found myself in a craft shop,” he says. “I bought a starter kit of a ladybird and then ended up spending most of my free time stitching it, much to my fiancée’s delight when I got home!”

The ladybird kit was only the beginning. Since completing it, Tim has turned his needle and thread to a surfing meerkat, a pretty floral bookmark, a tiger and lots of little motifs for cards. “I love stitching smaller designs that are quick to finish,” he smiles.

Tim also enjoys the satisfaction that comes with gifting his finished projects to loved ones – especially to his fiancée, Rebecca. “The floral bookmark was a present for her. She loved it, as I’d taken the time to make it for her myself.”

But what do Tim’s fellow shipmates think of his hobby? “I recently took my stitching to the command room on the ship – and it was met with great interest!” he reveals. “I thought I might get a bit of teasing, but everyone was asking me lots of questions about it. It turns out I’m not the only cross stitcher, either – turns out our Portuguese crane driver also enjoys it!” Who knew?

Stitching isn’t Tim’s only passion, though. He also loves tattoos and heavy metal music… in fact, that’s his background music while he stitches!

Although he’s not one for making plans, he has plenty more stitching projects lined up, and it seems as though he has an exciting few months ahead. “The one plan that Rebecca and I do have is to move to Cyprus, and the intention is to get married by the end of the year, too.” We wish you the best of luck, Tim!
