Does anyone use a magnifier?

Postby islasmila » Sun Nov 02, 2014 6:01 pm

I think cross stitching is giving me headaches. Has anyone ever used a magnifier before or have any recommendations for one? I must be straining my eyes. I was looking at this one but it's a little more than I wanted to spend. http://www.sewandso.co.uk/Products/Vusi ... 61035.aspx

Isla I couldn't manage without one. I have a floor standing magnifying daylight lamp at home which Chris got me for Christmas almost 14 years ago. I bought a table one in Aldi earlier this year which I keep in the caravan and it was £19.99 which was the cheapest I'd seen for that type.

Do you wear glasses .. If so have words with the optician .. You possible just need better light .. Good light is as good as a magnifier ... This with a daylight bulb might help

I have one of those neck magnifiers but could not come right with it so gave up. I have stronger spectacles which I use for stitching

Tried one before but couldn't get on with it. I have been saving up to buy a lamp but can't quite decide which type to go for.

The Ikea lamp with a daylight bulb works as well as an expensive one

I bought a regular lamp (standard/cheapest one from Argos) and then a daylight bulb from a local lighting shop. I made sure it all fitted into each other before the purchases though.
It's only a table lamp, but I have a shelf behind where I stitch which the lamp sits on so it works perfectly - and it didn't cost very much at all to get both items.

Never tried a magnifier but on my last WIP I thought it would have been useful for some bits of it.

I could never get away with a magnifier. The problem for me seems to be lighting. I plan on getting a floor lamp like the one Rita has put up and buying a decent daylight bulb x

Mine is a light and magnifier in one. There is a daylight bulb screwed in above the magnifying part and in my little one there is a small tube light around the magnfier

Thanks everyone! I think I need to look into getting a daylight bulb. I want one I can clip onto my q snap and possibly with a magnifier as well. Any suggestions?

I've got a neck magnifier and i love it. I brought it at the creative stitches show when it was in Exeter in September mine cost me around £5, although saying that i also need to get my eyes checked

Thanks! I went for the one off amazon. A little bit like the maplin one you posted but the light is built into the magnifying glass. I will let you know how I get on. Think I'm putting the stitching aside until it arrives.

I use magnifiers for black and white patterns. Sometimes the symbols aren't very clear.
