How to make a scented sachet

Once you’ve finished cross stitching your design, gently wash and press it. Trim it to size, about 12x10.5cm (5x4¼in) for a sachet the same size as ours.

Cut a coordinating piece of backing fabric in your choice of fabric and colour, the same size.

Cut a piece of ribbon 12cm (5in) long. Form a loop, then pin the ends to the top of the sachet, making sure the loop points down, over the front of your stitching.

Pin together the two pieces of fabric, with right sides facing, so the ribbon loop is now sandwiched inside, between the layers. Using a 1cm (¼in) seam allowance, hand- or machine-stitch all the way around, leaving a small gap at the bottom for turning through. Turn through, pushing out corners neatly, and press flat.

Firmly fill your sachet with wadding, evenly distributing it for a lump-free finish. You can add lavender or pot-pourri at this stage to create a scented sachet. Pin the gap and slip stitch closed in matching thread, for an invisible finish.
