KNOW-HOW

Making simple Christmas Tree Decorations
Save money had have fun as we show you how to create some fun Christmas Tree decorations!

Plastic canvas and perforated paper are ideal materials for stitching your own unique Christmas decorations, and the technique for both is almost the same.

What you need:

* Cross stitch chart of your chosen design.
* Stranded cotton
* Size 24 tapestry needle
* Felt for backing
* Thin ribbon
* Double-sided sticky tape

1. Cut a piece of plastic canvas or perforated paper, whichever you are using, from a larger sheet. Remember to allow an extra 5cm (2in) margin all the way around. Stitch the design in the same way as you would on aida fabric. On 14-count plastic canvas you will find that three strands of thread gives a better coverage. Two strands are fine on perforated paper.

2. Once you have finished stitching your design, you need to trim it to size. Do this using a sharp pair of scissors, and remember to cut one complete hole away from your stitching, so that a narrow border is left around the edge of the motif.
3. To complete your decoration, make a small loop out of a length of thin ribbon and attach this to the back of the design using double-sided tape. Finally, cut a piece of felt to size and stick this to the reverse of the design. Your stitching is now ready to hang on the tree.
