What sort of fabric is used for miniature stitching? You can use a 36- or 55-count linen evenweave for miniature stitching but many stitchers prefer to use a silk gauze as this is easier to work on.
What is silk gauze? Silk gauze is an interlocking evenweave canvas made from filaments of raw silk. It is beautifully smooth and has a nice open weave which helps to make the holes easier to see. Although it is a delicate fabric, it is also robust, holding its shape well.
What size count of silk gauze can you buy? Silk gauze can be bought in varying counts up to as high as 112 HPI (Holes Per Inch). However, if you are new to stitching in miniature, try starting off with a 34- or 40-count gauze.
How do you stitch on silk gauze? Work the design you want to stitch using just one strand of cotton or silk. As silk gauze is too fine for a full cross stitch, you stitch the design using just a half cross stitch.
What can I use my stitched miniatures for? Miniature stitching can be used for all sorts of things. You can use finished designs to decorate a dolls house, or make exquisite piece of jewellery.
