KNOW-HOW

Needle FAQs

What size needle do I need for cross stitch?
You will need a blunt tapestry needle for cross stitch. Pick a size that matches the count of your fabric:

FABRIC SIZE = 8 and 11 count aida NEEDLE SIZE = 22
FABRIC SIZE = 14-count aida NEEDLE SIZE = 24
FABRIC SIZE = 16 and 18-count aida; 28,30 and 32-count evenweave over two; 22-count hardanger and finer NEEDLE SIZE = 28

What needle do I use for beadwork?
You will need a fine needle that passes through the centre of your beads. Try a size 28 tapestry or a beading needle. Milward bead embroidery needles are shorter than standard beading needles.

How can I thread my needle more easily?
Try looping the end of the thread over the needle to make a fold, then push this fold through the eye. A second option is to buy a needle threader. This has a loop of fine wire at one end which you push through the eye of the needle. You then insert the thread in the wire loop and pull the threader gently so that the thread goes through the eye.

How can I stop my needles from tarnishing?
Tapestry needles are nickel plated and over time they will tarnish. Eventually they will become so rough they snag the threads, and will have to be replaced. If you want your needles to last longer, try using gold-plated ones. These are also very smooth to sew with.

What needle do I use for waste canvas?
When stitching a motif on clothing or bed linen with waste canvas, use a sharp or crewel needle. This will pass through the fabric more easily than a tapestry needle. On jersey and woven fabrics, you may find a tapestry needle passes through the fabric better.
