What sort of fabric should I use to teach my four year old to stitch? Try using a 6-count Binca fabric and brightly coloured wool. This is easier than stranded cotton as it is less fiddly to work with. Start off with really simple designs that only use a few colours. The smaller the design the better, as the quicker it will be finished, giving your little one a sense of satisfaction.
What size of needle should I use with 6-count Binca fabric? You will need to use a size 18 tapestry needle for stitching on 6-count Binca. For 8-count fabric use a size 20, and for 11-count aida the best size to use is a size 22 tapestry needle.
Aren't scissors and needles rather dangerous for young children? Yes they can be, but so can all sorts of other things, such as crayons or glue. It's just a matter of being sensible. Young stitchers should always be closely supervised, and the thread can be cut by an adult, so that it is ready to use. Another good tip is to not use too long a length of thread, so that when pulling it through the fabric, the needle is kept well away from the eyes.
Are there any kits available for children? Yes, there is a huge range. Try contacting Daisy Designs on (+44) (0)29 2088 0044, Coats Crafts on (+44) (0)1325 394237 or Paget Designs on (+44) (0)1621 868867 and ask for details on their designs for children.
