KNOW-HOW

Rescue Remedies FAQs

I bought some cheap thread and the colours ran when I washed my stitching. Is there anything I can do?
Don't panic! Just keep rinsing the stitching in cold water until the water is completely clear and no more colour comes out. If you are worried about the colours running, wash your work at a high temperature. This actually helps fix the colours in your threads. It's worth remembering that you shouldn't encounter this problem if you choose one of the recommended brands, DMC, Anchor or Madeira stranded cotton. Save those cheapies for small quick stitch projects that don't require washing.

What should I do when the fabric I bought in a kit is very heavily creased?
The best way to remove a stubborn crease is to press it with a steam iron before you start stitching. Although this may not completely remove the crease, it will make it much easier to iron again with a light heat, once you've completed your design.

How can I be sure the backstitch detail I'm stitching on a design won't pucker my fabric?
Your fabric will only pucker if you work the backstitch too tightly. To prevent this happening make sure you work the backstitch whilst your fabric is held taut within a hoop. This will enable each backstitch to be pulled flat to the aida or evenweave.

How do I avoid getting in a muddle when unpicking mistakes?
Tricky unpicking is often the cause of untidy stitching. As you stitch, make sure that the top arm of each cross stitch is made in the same direction. This way, if you do need to do any unpicking, you will be able to do it simply by backtracking along your stitching.

I've finished a design, only to realise there's not enough border left for the frame I wanted to put it in, what should I do?
To overcome this problem you will need to use a wide mount to bridge the gap between the stitching and the edge of the frame. Choose a shade of mount that picks up a colour in the design, and no-one will ever realise your mistake.
