Can I mix thread brands when stitching? It's really quite important that you stick to one brand of thread when stitching a particular project. You will find that corresponding colours in the well known ranges (DMC, Anchor and Madeira) vary slightly and using two or more manufacturers may distort your colours.
What is the best way to store my threads? This is really a matter of personal preference but a storage system of some sort is advisable. You can either buy bobbins and wind your skeins onto these, which can then be stored in a purpose made box, or you can buy storage systems that allow you to slide a complete skein into individual plastic folders and then store these in a clip file. Both of these systems allow you to keep your threads neat, clean and tidy, and also help you to see at a glance what shades of thread you already have in stock.
How is stranded cotton made? Stranded cotton is made from pure cotton and is treated with caustic soda in a process called mercerisation. This gives the thread a lovely sheen. The thread is also 'gassed' to remove fine surface hairs and make it much smoother. This results in a soft, strong thread that is unlikely to snap or fluff and will last for many years.
What is variegated thread? Variegated threads are widely available though still not used much by stitchers. If you look at a variegated thread you will see that the thread colour changes along its' length. When stitching with this type of thread, complete each stitch as you go to gain the best effect from the variation in colour.
Can I wash my thread? The three main manufacturers, DMC, Anchor and Madeira, all state that their stranded cotton is colourfast and can be washed at 95 degrees and ironed on a high setting. However, if you intend washing a precious design you have just completed, you may prefer to wash it gently by hand for your own piece of mind.
