KNOW-HOW

Christmas stitching

1. Stock up on your stitching supplies, especially lots of Christmassy bits and bobs such as fabric and threads in seasonal shades.

2. Add a few skeins of glittery thread to your collection - a little bit of sparkle goes a long way to making a design extra special. See our top 10 tips on stitching with metallic thread.

3. Choose lots of small, easy designs so that you can send stitched cards to as many people as possible.

4. Save money by clubbing together with your stitching friends to buy materials in bulk.

5. If you don't have time to create large pictures for all the family, then mount small designs in good quality ready-made accessories.

6. Remember that stitched gifts are going to be on display all year round, so you don't have to stick to seasonal designs.

7. Get organised for Christmas stitching by doing all your other shopping as early as possible, then you can settle down to some quality stitching time.

8. If your Christmas designs use French knots, then try adding seed beads instead to give extra sparkle.

9. Use seasonal charms and buttons to add interest to the simplest of designs.

10. Finally, be realistic about how much time you really have available for stitching. However, you much you love cross stitch, do you really want to be sat up till midnight on Christmas Eve, frantically finishing off your stitching?
