KNOW-HOW

How to Make a Pincushion
Our easy steps will help you to make a gorgeous pincushion in no time at all. These instructions are specific to the ‘gift set’ design in issue 119 of The World of Cross Stitching, but you can adjust the colours and sizes to fit your own project

Front panel of cushion
• Add a 1cm border to your cross-stitch design and trim to size. Your fabric should now measure 8.8cm x 8.8cm.
• Cut four pieces of green fabric that measure 4.5cm wide and 13.3cm long.
• Find the centre of the long edge of one of the green fabric rectangles and carefully align with the centre of one of the edges of the cross-stitch design, right sides together. Pin and tack in place.
• Sew the seam as close to the outer edge of the cross stitch design as possible, using a 1cm seam allowance and running stitch. Ensure the seam runs only as long as the stitched area and measures 6.8cm.
• Repeat for all four sides.
• Mitre the edges of each corner using a running stitch to assemble the front piece of the cushion. Press front panel flat.

Back panel of cushion
• Cut a square of green fabric that measures 13.3cm x 13.3cm

Assembly of cushion
• Place front panel of cushion and back panel of cushion right sides together.
• Pin and tack in place, sew a 1cm seam around the edge of the cushion, leaving a small opening approximately 3cm on one side.
• Trim each corner of the square to allow for neat turning through.
• Turn cushion through so that the right side is now on top, carefully use a pair of scissors to push the corners out into a tidy point.
• Press cushion flat.
• Generously stuff the cushion using wadding and hand stitch the opening shut, being careful to hide each stitch to keep the seam tidy.

Cord
• Choose a matching thread colour to create the cord that will embellish the edge of the pincushion.
• Use a cord maker gadget to help you. Following the instructions enclosed with the cord maker create a length of cord that measures 55cm.
• Hand stitch the cord to the edge of the cushion, tying a knot at one corner with a short frayed end measuring 4.5cm.
