What sort of motifs work best for Assisi work?
Simple motifs are the best. Letters of the alphabet, animals, birds and flowers are the more traditional motifs used, but designs such as Celtic knot patterns are also very effective.
I've finished my own Assisi design - does it need a border?
Assisi style motifs always look much better within a border. This can be a backstitch line or just a single row of cross stitch. If you are feeling adventurous try to create an ornate border with curls and scrolls using Holbein stitch or backstitch. In Assisi this work is called 'filigree scrollwork'.
How can I add depth of colour to an Assisi design? You can add depth to the cross stitch by using two or three shades of one colour. Start by using two strands of A for the first row, then one strand of A and one of B for the second row. Then use two strands of B for the third row, one of B and C for the fourth row and so on.
How can I achieve interesting results?
Space dyed threads work particularly well in Assisi work and you can achieve many effects without threading and rethreading your needle. Work each stitch individually for one effect or try working a row of half stitches, completing the cross on the return journey for a completely different effect.
